Last week, from Monday to Wednesday, we kicked off our inaugural student leadership camp, and what an incredible experience it was! Accompanied by Mr. John Staer, our dedicated Health & Physical Education Teacher, Mrs. Tina Caruso, our Learning Support Coordinator, and myself, we gathered 17 students, along with Sarah Welch, a graduate and former student leader, from various locations spanning Perth to Busselton. Upon arrival, we were joined by Mrs. Rochelle Oaklands, a Learning Support Teacher, Mr. Quentin Oaklands, and Mr. David John Paul Ramsay, both DE Teachers.
The first day's afternoon and evening were dedicated to team-building activities, board games, and card games. Later that evening, at 8 pm, Mrs. Phipson joined us via Teleconference to lead a devotion and offer prayers for our student leadership team. Witnessing the students bonding, forging new friendships, and reconnecting—some meeting in person for the first time—was truly heartwarming. It was evident from the outset that the camp would be a rewarding and enjoyable experience for each participant.

Day 2 started early with everyone up before 7am to eat breakfast and pack their own lunch. We then headed out to Forest Adventures. At Forest Adventures our student leaders took on challenges, and faced their fears, in the high ropes courses. It was epic!
After some lunch, we headed to Dunsborough for Simmo’s. Who likes Ice Cream? It was so good! Especially on a hot day and after the high ropes. We had another teleconference in the afternoon with the student leaders who were not on camp for our first Student Leaders Meeting of the year. I shared about unity from John 17 and talked about what leadership will look like in 2024. My main point being that student leadership will look different for everyone.
After dinner, we had a picture perfect sunset as we embarked on the Busselton Jetty. We made it to the end and back, which is a decent walk, being 3.6km (1.8km each way). When we got back the student leaders in years 10 - 12 got to stay up a little bit longer to play another round of the popular role playing game Mafia. Both Sarah Welch and Blair Driscoll narrated at times which meant that I could join in and guide my team to victory. However, I failed miserably.
Day 3 was filled with cleaning up from camp and driving back home. Many of the students commented on how much fun they had and that they wished it was longer. A successful trip and one I hope to do again next year. Thank you to all the student leaders for your amazing behaviour on camp and willingness to help clean up, prepare and cook meals, and do jobs when needed.
The first student leadership camp was truly amazing! Accompanied by our dedicated staff and former student leader Sarah Welch, our team of 17 students embarked on and adventures and meaningful discussions about leadership. Despite the early mornings and long walks, the enthusiasm and camaraderie of the students never wavered. As we wrapped up the camp and headed back home, it was clear that the experience had left a lasting impact on everyone involved. I'm grateful for the opportunity to lead such a fantastic group of student leaders and look forward to many more adventures in the future. Thank you to all for making this trip a success!
