The classic program is an initiative of one of our Distance Education teachers, Mr Stephen Hurworth.

Here is some feedback from our current students:

Matilda Reddington (Year 8) Classics interview:

1. What is the most interesting thing you have learnt about Ancient Greece so far? My favourite thing that we have studied so far would be the Ancient Greece Olympics. They were held every 4 years in Olympia for men to compete. They were held in honour of the Greek god, Zeus, when participants arrived, they had to give offerings to him. Some of the events held in the Ancient Greece olympics are still competed in today. Some of these include: Running, long jump, shot put, javelin and boxing. 2. Describe some of the key gods/goddesses from Ancient Greece. Zeus- king of all the gods and goddesses, he was god of the sky, and when provoked he could shoot lightning bolts. His wife was Hera, Zeus was the father of 6 kids (Artemis, Apollo, Hermes, Athena, Ares and Aphrodite). Poseidon- god of all the seas, storms, earthquakes and horses. Married to 3 greek goddesses Amphitrite, Aphrodite and Demeter. He was a father to 11 children (Theseus, Triton, Polyphemus, Orion, Belus, Agenor, Neleus, Atlas, Pegasus, Chrysaor and Cymopolia). Athena- goddess of warfare, handicraft and wisdom. She never married and had no children. She was the most treasured child of Zeus. She sprang, fully grown from her fathers head. Aphrodite- no one knows where she came from, she is the only greek god/goddess to have neither a mother nor a father. She was first spotted by the west wind, where she rose out of the sea. Wife of Hephaestus and mother of 8 children (Deimos, Phobos, Harmonia, Adrestia, and the 4 erotes: Eros, Anteros, Pothos and Himeros). One day, many years later, she dived back into the sea and when she rose again she was as young and beautiful once again. When she returned home, she regretted marrying Hephaestus, she would rather have hid brother, Ares. 3. What would you say to any other student who was thinking about joining this course? If you enjoy studying English and History (which I do!) then I can guarantee that you will love the Classics Course. I still manage to keep up with all my other subjects whilst doing the Classics Course, so it is manageable to mix it in with your daily work load. Mr Hurworth is a really good teacher who is very approachable and assigns me some fun and interesting activities. It would be great to have some other students join Classics as I'm currently the only student in the class and i think it is a good experience.

Classics Year 10 work sample:

Here is a showcase of Ronna Sloan's Website on Jane Austen! We think it's really impressive.
