Year 10 and 11 students are currently enjoying their Futures Camp. This trip is a vital part of our curriculum. The theme of ‘futures’ is explicitly addressed through conversations and activities, plus visiting speakers centre on the importance of being intentional with your final years of schooling. Students explore topics of identity, community and leadership while building stronger relationships with their peers and current and future Pastoral Care teachers. Not only do students tour universities and other adult learning environments, but they also gain a greater understanding of the Perth metropolitan area. The camp is run each year, so by participating in two Futures camps, students can visit each university plus a range of other learning centres, in addition to having an experience of both north and south of the river. This year, students are staying at Ern Halliday recreation centre near Hillarys, and I was astounded that many of our students had never visited Hillary’s boat harbour. Some students did not even know that Joondalup existed! This reinforces how important it is for our students to have these broadening experiences as they prepare for their lives beyond school.
