Welcome back for Term Three. I hope supervisors and students are all returning healthy, rested and ready for a fresh start and with some new goals for the second half of the year.

Monday morning at 9am saw our inaugural parent Q & A session held via the BigBlueButton platform that students use to join their class teleconferences.  It was lovely to have some new parents join, along with some who have been with us for quite some time and were able to share their wisdom.  We would like to run these sessions regularly and are hoping that they might also become a time when parents can share the joys and challenges of schooling through Distance Education and perhaps support one another.  Our next session, as well as having time for questions, will very likely centre around the role of the supervisor and we hope some of our veteran supervisors might join to share their wisdom.  Mondays are a good fit for our staff but we can be a bit flexible with the timing so let us know if a different time suits you better.  We might try a lunch session next if that is popular.

We are hoping to try a few other initiatives shortly to give students living within a reasonable distance of Perth an opportunity to work together on their schoolwork once or twice a term whilst meeting others and making connections. We still need to work out the logistics and of course, make sure we have all the required checks and balances in place but will let you know when this is ready to be up and running.

Year 6 News

At the end of Term 2, in Visual Arts, students created a number of pieces of work focusing on different styles. These included: poster-style artwork, optical illusions, surrealism and collages. Students were taught skills which could be applied to their artwork.

In one lesson, they had to follow step by step instructions to try to achieve a drawing that shows shape, line, contrast, balance and perspective. They used drawing techniques to create depth and dimension in their artwork with the use of shading and highlighting. Graphite pencils of various grades were used to create dark shadow areas and contrast between the objects. In another lesson, students learnt about secondary and tertiary colours in order to explore shades and tints.

Below are examples of students’ work of Surrealism where they had to create their own imaginary design based on a dreamlike idea in graphite pencil based on a Vladimir Kush artwork.

In another lesson, students explored collages and created artwork based around Australian flora, fauna and birds. They could choose one of the given examples to base their work on, or create a totally original one. Here are some students’ artwork.
