Term 1 Snapshot
Last Term has just flown by and it seems like Term 2 has snuck up on us! Much has happened over Term 1 and I thought I would ask our wonderful Primary Teachers to outline some of the exciting topics our students have been learned about so far. I also thought I would take this opportunity to mention some of the recent changes that have taken place in the Primary Program.
Pre-Primary Program (Mrs Loretta Upton)
Last term our Pre-Primary students worked to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills in Literacy. Using the Initial-Lit Program students viewed videos and worked through the program to learn letter names and sounds. They have also worked to develop good handwriting skills. They have read and discussed stories with their home supervisor. Students created a video presentation focusing on ‘eye contact, voice volume, and standing still.
In Maths students viewed teacher instruction videos and completed assigned pages in ‘Targeting Maths F’ workbooks. They completed online quizzes and assignments to demonstrate understanding of numbers 0-10, 2D shapes, subtraction, addition and capacity. They also completed assessment worksheets to show their understanding of numbers 0-10, measurement and simple subtraction and addition to 10 using a variety of strategies.
During ‘Integrated Studies’ students had the opportunity to explore the topics ‘All About Me’ and ‘My Family’. In these topics they were able to see how they had changed over time, and make connections with extended family and their place in the world. Students also explored the topic ‘Amazing Animals’ learning about how to care for family pets to meet all the requirements needed to keep them happy, healthy and safe. These topics were studied incorporating all parts of the curriculum.
Students have had the opportunity to get to know their teacher and a little about each other during ’The Meeting Place’ conferences where they have enjoyed a ‘Show and Tell”’ time.
Year 1 Program (Mrs Loretta Upton)
Last term students have used the Initial-Lit Program to increase their reading vocabulary, improve spelling skills and gain a larger bank of sight words. They have had the opportunity to listen to and read a range of texts and to re-tell these stories.
Students have been able to make comparisons between stories and their own lives and show how well they have comprehended the content of books.
In Maths students have worked on extending their skills in all areas of this field including telling the time to the hour on an analogue and a digital clock.
Students have learned about ‘Light and Sound’ in Science studying the way light and sound travel to the eye and ear.
‘Changes Over Time’ in HASS had students looking at how natural, managed and constructed features have changed over time.
Students worked on ‘Fundamental Movement Skills’ in PE and learned about themselves in Health.
The topic of music in ‘The Arts’ gave students the opportunity to perform and record the ‘Hello Song’ for assessment.
Students have had the opportunity to get to know their teacher and a little about each other during ’The Meeting Place’ conferences where they have enjoyed a ‘Show and Tell”’ time.
Year 2 Program (Mrs Loretta Upton)
Last term students worked in the Initial-Lit Program focusing on reading, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Students were given the opportunity to work on their writing skills to produce some stories for assessment.
Students continued to extend their knowledge and skills in Maths covering areas such as addition and subtraction, shape, time and fractions.

In Science students looked at the Life Cycle of mealworms. They made predictions about how they would develop and what they would look like in the adult stage. Students then created a model of each stage of development.
HASS had students studying their connections to places around the world. Students interviewed an adult in their life to gain information about their connection to places around the world. This information was then used to create a key and to map these connections.
Health and PE had students learning about the need to rest the brain and care for the body. Students worked on skills used by the AFL.
Garden to Plate was the topic in Technology. This gave students an opportunity to look at healthy food and to have a go at growing some themselves.
