The inaugural Wellness Day for Distance Education students was held on Friday 4 November. It was an initiative born out of a desire to connect our students and give them tools and ideas to support their wellbeing.

Some of the Inclusive Education funding was channeled to fund this event making it free to attend for students and their parents/guardians. The excursion was held on a beautiful rural property in Bedfordale and the day consisted of lecture style talks alongside wellness activities.

Four short informative talks were given:

  • Brain development and stress management by Nicole Brown (AISWA Wellbeing Consultant)

  • Nutrition and physical wellbeing by Loretta Huggett (Dietician)

  • Growth Mindset and self-talk by Linda Roney (ACC teacher)

  • Spiritual Wellbeing by Luke Wiseman (ACC Chaplain)

Between talks, students enjoyed a mix of different activities. On the nature walk, they wandered through the property’s gardens and fed carrots to the resident horse and cows. Students also tested their flexibility in a stretch class with physiotherapist Susanna Tan. An Art and Craft table was set up with a variety of supplies for students to paint, draw, colour or explore sensory activities. They made squish balls, played with Slimy Ever Foam, and created some stunning art pieces.

We look forward to hearing the feedback from the students and parents so we can make this an annual event. As DE continues to grow our heart is to create more opportunities for students to interact, grow in their social and emotional development and gain awareness to improve their wellbeing.
