Year 9 & 10 Enrichment Course

Exciting opportunity for ACC Students!

Dear Parents From 2021, Australian Christian College will be commencing a new enrichment course Best Books 9/10 – The Modern World. This course is designed to extend ACC students to the full range of their academic potential. In addition to the literacy benefits, the enrichment programme will equip participating students with the life skills and the wisdom that come from cultivating broader knowledge. It will challenge students to think independently and learn to utilise their own skills of logic and rhetoric as they consider some of life’s great questions.

In Best Books 9/10 Students are introduced to the Modern World. Throughout the year students will be doing a historical and literary overview of the Modern World covering some of the ideas, events and individuals who have shaped the world since 1500.

Students will begin by studying Genevieve Foster’s popular work, The World of Columbus and Sons, which describes the world of Europe at the time of the first journeys of exploration. Students will gain an understanding of events and movements surrounding the Reformation and the Renaissance as well as the challenges facing the early explorers. In Term 2 students will be reading the adventure story Robinson Crusoe which describes the life of a solitary shipwreck survivor on a desert island and his struggle to survive, while also learning about the Reformed values underlying the text. In the second Semester students will be reading the romantic classic Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen which charts the struggle of Elizabeth Bennett’s family and the challenge of finding suitable partners for herself and her four sisters. Rich in humour and social commentary, the story is also an insight into Georgian society during the English golden age. Finally, students will come to grips with an Australian history classic The Tyranny of Distance which provides and overview of the development of modern Australia with an emphasis on trade and economic history. In addition to the literacy benefits, the enrichment programme will equip participating students with the life skills and the wisdom that comes from broader knowledge. Entrance is by means of a test for new Year 9 or 10 students. Existing students who have an A or B grade in HASS or English are encouraged to attempt the course without an entry test. Tuition will be by means of weekly webinars as well as self-paced study. It is imperative that students who attempt the course and keen readers as this is an essential requirement. Students will also need self-discipline and a sense of humor will go a long way! I look forward to welcoming your students to this new initiative. It is a great honour and privilege to be able to teach them these great stories from the past. It is my hope and prayer that this time of study will greatly enrich their own learning journey. Yours sincerely Mr Stephen Hurworth Classical Learning and Enrichment Coordinator
